As Lutherans, we believe the faith God gave to us in Holy Baptism is nourished by the hearing of God’s Word and the receiving of the bread and the wine of Holy Communion. Classes for those preparing to receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion for the first time are held on three Wednesday evenings in September. Instruction is usually for those entering the 7th grade and enrolling in the Level 1 Confirmation Class. Parents are required to accompany their children to these three classes. Students successfully completing the three classes will be eligible to receive Holy Communion for the first time on World Communion Sunday, usually the first weekend in October. Any questions may be directed to Pastor Schaeffer.
Confirmation instruction is a two-year program. Generally, students enter Level 1 in 7th grade and complete Level 2 in 8th grade. St. John’s Confirmation Classes begin with an informational meeting and registration, usually on the first Wednesday evening in October for all Level 1 and Level 2 students and their parents. Classes continue each Wednesday evening through May/June. As is the tradition at St. John’s, Confirmation takes place on Pentecost Sunday. At the 10:45 a.m. worship service, the 8th grade students affirm their baptism and are confirmed. After two years of instruction, service projects, sermon slips and Bible study, the confirmands will come to the altar rail to affirm their faith publicly. For questions about Confirmation, please speak with Pastor Schaeffer.
